Yates Dam falls is directly across from the cider mill in Rochester Hill, Michigan. The flower in the foreground is called purple loosestrife or Lythrum salicaria is a native of Europe. It was introduced to the United States in the 1800’s for its beauty and nectar-producing capability makes it attractive for bee keepers. Once introduced in the United States it has spread throughout most of North America. Some 24 states prohibit the importation, distribution and cultivation of Purple Loosestrife. It grows best in moist soils that range from neutral to slightly acidic. A single mature plant can produce over two million seeds a year with germination rates as high as 60-70, that and no natural predators make this plant very invasive.
