Pointe Aux Barques lighthouse was established in 1847 in Lake Huron near Saginaw Bay. The first light keeper Peter Shook drowned in 1849 and his wife Catherine Shook became America's first female light keeper. In 1908 the lighthouse tower was replaced with the current structure and stands 89 feet.

Michael has had a fascination with photography since childhood, however, later in life it has become a more important aspect of his life. He sees photography as a means to bring the beauty of creation to other people. Life is too valuable and precious to him to just let it pass by. Michael and his wife, Suzanne live in Northern Michigan in a log home on their flower and berry farm. Much of his wildlife photography comes off the farm or location close by it.
