Description
Before the time of the European settlers, this was the land of the Ojibwa people. They occupied the land of the Upper Great Lakes, and they named many places for what resemblance they could see of an animal as they viewed it from the water. So we have places with names such as Beaver Island, Porcupine Mountains, Sleeping Bear Dunes and Laughing Whitefish. At the place where the river flows into Lake Superior if viewed from the lake the Ojibwa felt it resembled a whitefish laughing.
The scenic site was established in 1965 with a donation from Celotex Corporation of 100 acres including the 100 foot Laughing Whitefish Falls. Additional property has been added through the years and now encompasses 960 acres.
Laughing whitefish Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in Michigan overall height 100 feet. This large stair step slide falls is located just outside Chatham, Michigan. On my website waterfallsofmichigan.com I provide more photos as well as directions on locating the falls.
