This fort is a five-sided structure build with bricks and stone; the outer walls average 4 � feet thick. It was built from 1826-1834 when it was garrisoned. In 1924 the state of North Carolina purchased it for one dollar and it became the states second state park.

Michael has had a fascination with photography since childhood, however, later in life it has become a more important aspect of his life. He sees photography as a means to bring the beauty of creation to other people. Life is too valuable and precious to him to just let it pass by. Michael and his wife, Suzanne live in Northern Michigan in a log home on their flower and berry farm. Much of his wildlife photography comes off the farm or location close by it.
