Description
The female Red-bellied Woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) can be distinguished from the male by the gray cap, the male has an all red cap. Even though it is called a red-bellied woodpecker the red color on it's belly is easily missed. They prefer shady woodlands and nests in holes they excavate in rotting trees. The will often return to the same tree the following year and excavate a new nest below the prior years nest.
