Artist's Description
Eldred Rock Lighthouse is an octagon shaped lighthouse built in 1905 and first lit on June 1, 1906. It is the last of ten Alaskan lighthouses constructed between 1902 and 1906. Constructed on a small island called Eldred Rock in the Lynn Canal these rough stormy waters are surrounded by majestic mountains. It was built due to the high number of shipwrecks during the gold rush of 1898. The most famous of which was the steamship Clara Nevada that went down under suspicious circumstances. At least 75 lives were lost that day along with 850 pounds of gold. There were four survivors however, the gold was never found. Today in 20011 it would be worth $32,640,000.00.
About Michael Peychich
Michael has had a fascination with photography since childhood, however, later in life it has become a more important aspect of his life. He sees photography as a means to bring the beauty of creation to other people. Life is too valuable and precious to him to just let it pass by. Michael and his wife, Suzanne live in Northern Michigan in a log home on their flower and berry farm. Much of his wildlife photography comes off the farm or location close by it. Excellent work! Thank you for adding the history of this lighthouse to your submission. I always do that, too. These wonderful structures were built, manned and maintained 100% for good. Think of all the peoples' lives who have been saved by this one lighthouse! V/F
