The Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) with its wingspan that can exceed ten feet and weighing up to 25 pounds is the largest native bird in North America. In order to take off it can require one hundred yards. They will breed in Northwestern United States, Alaska and Canada and winter on inland lakes and ice-free costal waters.
Trumpeter Swans will pair up when 3-4 years on age and usually mate for life. They can live to be up to 32 years old in captivity but usually not more than 26 in the wild.
These were flying over the Alcona Dam Backwater, located in Northern Michigan.
Michael has had a fascination with photography since childhood, however, later in life it has become a more important aspect of his life. He sees photography as a means to bring the beauty of creation to other people. Life is too valuable and precious to him to just let it pass by. Michael and his wife, Suzanne live in Northern Michigan in a log home on their flower and berry farm. Much of his wildlife photography comes off the farm or location close by it.
