Common Merganser
Mergus merganser
This is a fish eating duck that can be found in clear fresh water lakes and rivers. They are called Goosanders by the British. They feed by diving and swimming underwater and seek fish, mussels, salamanders and occasionally underwater plants. The adult ducks can swallow fish up to 12 inches long whereas the young feed mainly on aquatic insects.
